Government Presents Internet in 1,705 Papua Locations, Encourages Equalization of Digital Access

Jayapura, May 21, 2025 — Efforts to equalize digital access in the eastern region of Indonesia have again shown significant progress. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital (Wamenkomdigi) Nezar Patria revealed that currently at least 1,705 locations in Tanah Papua have been connected to the internet. This was conveyed after conducting a work visit and a direct review of free internet access in Skow Sae Village, Muara Tami District, Jayapura City, Papua.

“From the 1,705 locations, as many as 351 points are connected through the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) network, while the other 1,354 points are in public services such as schools, health facilities, village offices, houses of worship, traditional markets, to TNI and Polri defense posts,” explained Nezar Patria on Wednesday (5/21/2025).

Nezar also emphasized that this step is part of the government’s commitment to provide inclusive and equitable digital connectivity, especially in areas that have been classified as blank spots or minimal network access.

Previously, Deputy Ministry of Communication visited the TNI Navy Post in Skow Sae Village, which is one of the receiving points for free internet service from the Telecommunication and Information Accessibility Agency (BAKTI). At that location, he directly inspected the utilization of network facilities by security personnel and the surrounding community.

According to Nezar, the existence of the internet is not only a means of communication, but also a bridge for education, health services, economic activities, and national defense.

“Papua has unique geographical challenges, but that is not an obstacle to continuing to expand digital services. The central government, through the Ministry of Communication and Information and BAKTI, continues to strive to strengthen the telecommunication infrastructure in this region,” he added.

With the increase in the number of internet-connected locations in Papua, it is hoped that the quality of life of the people will improve and create a digital space that supports sustainable and inclusive development.
