The Mayor of Jayapura Unforgets “Waste Aware City” for a Cleaner and Healthier Environment

Jayapura, Papua — In an effort to create a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, the Mayor of Jayapura, Abisai Rollo, officially launched the “Waste Aware City” program on Saturday (5/3/2025).

This program aims to increase the awareness of the people of Jayapura City about the importance of maintaining cleanliness, as well as preventing floods in urban areas.

Located in Jayapura, the launch involves all Regional Device Organizations (OPD) in the Jayapura City Government environment. Mayor Abisai emphasized that maintaining the cleanliness of the city is not only the duty of the government, but also requires active participation from all levels of society.

“Protecting Jayapura City free from floods is our joint responsibility. The government and the community must join hands to create a clean and healthy city for the future of our children and grandchildren,” said Abisai.

He added, in this effort, OPD will be a driving force that encourages awareness of cleanliness in all sectors, including small and medium businesses (UMKM), shops, to the community. The implementation of this waste awareness culture is expected to be able to change the face of Jayapura City to be more orderly and comfortable.

The “Garbage Aware City” program is also an integral part of Abisai Rollo’s first 100-day work program as the Mayor of Jayapura. Therefore, he invited all elements of the community to support and make this movement successful.

“If we don’t start from now, the next generation will inherit a dirty and disaster-prone city. Let’s show that Jayapura is capable of becoming a pilot city of cleanliness in Papua,” he concluded.

With this initial step, the Jayapura City Government hopes to develop a collective awareness that preserving the environment is part of the daily lifestyle in order to create a cleaner, more beautiful, and resilient Port Numbay against climate change.
