Free Nutritional Meal Program (MBG) in East Biak Continues During Ramadhan

JAYAPURA, KOMPAS.com – Despite entering the month of Ramadhan 1446 Hijriah, the Free Nutritional Meal Program (MBG) in East Biak District, Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, remains in operation.

According to data collected, three elementary schools (SD) and one junior high school (SMP) participating in this program are predominantly attended by Christian students. However, there are also several Muslim students who will receive meal options that are in line with the recommendations of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), ensuring that the food can last throughout the fasting month.

“We plan to continue the MBG program on March 6, 2026,” said Diana Yulita Klemen, Head of the Nutritional Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) of Biak Numfor Regency, when contacted by Kompas.com on Wednesday (March 5, 2025).

Previously, the MBG program was implemented from February 17 to February 26, 2025. Diana explained that after this period, they prepared a report and submitted a budget request for the financing of the next phase of the MBG program.

Following the approval of the budget by the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), the program, which has been running for two weeks, is expected to continue. “We will resume this program starting tomorrow, March 6, 2026, until the end of the month,” she added.

She also hopes that the budget request submitted to BGN will result in additional funding, allowing the MBG program to reach more schools in Biak Numfor Regency. “We are proposing a budget to prepare 1,000 portions, so that other schools that have not benefited from the MBG can also enjoy this program,” she explained.

With this ongoing commitment, it is hoped that the MBG program can improve the health and welfare of students in the region during the holy month of Ramadhan.
