Indonesia Strengthens Healthcare Services in Papua through JKN Program

Jakarta – In addition to its efforts in education, the Indonesian government is also focused on improving healthcare services in Papua, particularly through the National Health Insurance (JKN) program, managed by BPJS Kesehatan.
Pupung Purnama, Head of the BPJS Kesehatan Branch in Sorong, revealed that in 2024, BPJS Kesehatan allocated a significant budget to healthcare services in Papua Barat Daya. “A total of IDR 213.137 billion has been spent by BPJS Kesehatan to cover medical services at partner healthcare facilities, with 331,601 cases treated,” said Pupung.
The JKN program ensures that every participant receives appropriate healthcare services, starting from basic treatment at Primary Healthcare Facilities (FKTP) to referrals to more advanced healthcare centers if necessary. “In emergencies, patients can be directly taken to the Emergency Room (ER) at hospitals, according to medical indications,” Pupung added.
Moreover, access to healthcare services has been further expanded. JKN participants only need to present their National Identity Number (NIK) when receiving treatment at BPJS Kesehatan partner facilities. Various administrative channels have been provided, such as WhatsApp-based administrative services (PANDAWA), the Mobile JKN app, Call Center 165, and the official BPJS Kesehatan website.
“Achieving the implementation of the JKN program in Papua Barat Daya in 2024 is thanks to the support and involvement of the media, which has consistently spread positive news about JKN,” said Pupung.
Through these various initiatives, the Indonesian government aims to create better educational and healthcare ecosystems for the people of Papua. The cooperation between the central government, local governments, and the private sector is expected to help Indonesia achieve its national goal of equitable prosperity and work towards the vision of a developed nation by 2045.
