Polsek Kurima Officer Shot by Unknown Gunmen, Police Launch Investigation

Yahukimo – An officer from the Polsek Kurima in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan, is suspected to have been the victim of a shooting by two unidentified individuals (OTK) on Saturday night (February 1st). The victim, Aipda Syam (43), who serves as the Head of Intelligence at Polsek Kurima, was injured in the incident. Currently, the victim has received medical treatment at the Wamena General Hospital and is in stable condition.
The incident occurred around 7:00 PM WIT when two unknown individuals arrived at the victim’s kiosk under the pretense of shopping. When the victim asked what they intended to buy, one of the assailants suddenly drew a weapon, believed to be a homemade firearm. The victim heard the sound of a gunshot before attempting to evade the attack. Realizing that he had been shot, the victim quickly turned off the lights and reached for a revolver that he had hidden under his pillow.
The victim then briefly fought back by firing his weapon at the assailants before quickly heading to a nearby TNI post to seek refuge. Shortly after the incident, personnel from the Jayawijaya Sat Intelkam, led by Ipda I Gede Cipta Adi Permana, arrived at the Wamena General Hospital to conduct further investigation.
Medical examination results showed no foreign objects in the area of the victim’s wound, so the medical team has yet to conclusively determine the cause of the injury.
The police suspect that the shooter is part of the armed criminal group (KKB) Ndugama, which had been previously detected in Kampung Wulagaima, Kurima District. Initial analysis suggests that the perpetrators were aware that Polsek Kurima was unoccupied and knew that the victim was a police officer.
Brigadier General Pol. Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, S.Sos., S.I.K., M.H., the Head of Operations for Cartenz Peace 2025, emphasized that the police will take firm action against the armed criminal groups threatening public safety and police personnel.
“We are conducting a deeper investigation into the identities of the perpetrators and will continue to pursue them. Security forces will increase patrols and security in areas prone to disturbances from armed criminal groups,” he stated.
Currently, the Cartenz Peace Intel Ops Task Force has implemented strategic steps, including coordination with the Law Enforcement Task Force (Satgas Gakkum) to track the communication of the suspects, who are suspected to be affiliated with the KKB. In addition, the role of intelligence networks is being optimized to detect the whereabouts of the KKB.
The Spokesperson of the Cartenz Peace Operations Task Force 2025, Kombes Pol. Yusuf Sutejo, S.I.K., M.T., urged the public to remain calm and not be provoked. He also requested that residents who have information about the KKB’s whereabouts report it to the police.
“We ask the public to remain vigilant and immediately report to security forces if they notice any suspicious activity in their area. Cooperation between the community and security forces is crucial to maintaining safety in the region,” he emphasized.
The police also urged all personnel in Yahukimo to enhance their readiness and implement layered security systems while on duty in the field.
The investigation is still ongoing to uncover the motive and capture the perpetrators responsible for the attack.
