Kamoro Traditional Leader: Mimika Election Must Be Peaceful, Avoid Hoaxes and Provocation

Mimika, September 4, 2024 – Marianinus Magnaiteku, head of the Kamoro customary institution, called on the people of Papua, particularly in Mimika Regency, to maintain peace and unity during the election process. He emphasized the importance of avoiding provocative issues and propaganda that could divide the community, especially amidst competition among candidate pairs.

“We request that during this election stage, we prevent any provocative issues or propaganda from reaching the community, especially those aimed at pitting supporters of different candidates against each other. This is unacceptable,” Marianus stated firmly.

He also reminded the public to be wary of false or hoax news circulating. “If you encounter any hoax news, we urge you to report it to the relevant authorities, particularly the police,” he added.

Marianus encouraged all members of the community to fully support the government’s efforts and security forces, particularly the Satgas Ops Damai Cartenz, in maintaining security and ensuring a smooth democratic process in Papua.

“Let us fully support the government and security forces, in this case, the Satgas Ops Damai Cartenz, in providing security so that the 2024 Pilkada Democratic Festival can run smoothly, safely, peacefully, and conducively,” he said.

In line with this, the Head of Public Relations for Ops Damai Cartenz 2024, Kombes Pol. Dr. Bayu Suseno, S.H., S.I.K., M.M., M.H., stated that the success of elections in Papua hinges on our collective responsibility, especially the participation of the community and prominent figures in Papua, particularly in the 9 areas of Operation Damai Cartenz.

He stressed the importance of respecting everyone’s choices and maintaining unity in order to ensure the success of the election.

“We all support the democratic process that is underway, it must be peaceful and secure, there should be no hoaxes or provocations. We must also respect each other’s choices so that we can successfully carry out this democratic process peacefully,” he concluded.
