Jakarta – President Joko Widodo has ordered related ministries and institutions, as well as local governments in Papua, to immediately deal with the effects of extreme weather that has occurred in Central Papua.
This was stated by Jokowi in response to journalists’ questions regarding efforts to deal with drought due to extreme weather, which caused crop failure and famine in Puncak Regency, Central Papua.
“I have ordered the Coordinating Minister for PMK, the Minister of Social Affairs, BNPB and also in the regions, in Papua to immediately handle it as soon as possible,” the President said in Jakarta, Monday (31/7).
The President emphasized that the problem that arises is that there are specific areas in Central Papua where it is winter, so plants cannot grow.
“The problem is, just so you know, there is a specific area where in the winter no plants grow, at a very high altitude, that district,” the President explained.
In addition, there are security-related constraints in distributing aid to the people there. According to the President, the aid plane did not dare to land due to security reasons.
“That’s why I asked the TNI to help escort. There, the problem is always like that, the terrain is very difficult, the pilots don’t dare to go down, so that’s the problem,” he said.
For information, extreme weather in Central Papua has occurred since June 2023. Currently it is reported that at least six people have died due to extreme weather which has re
